Other Race Relations Issues

Some of these topics are rather touchy, but the material below is presented as a public service for the benefit of people who who get all their information from television news, labor unions, and the "talking points" spread at the office by left-wing activists.

Segregation Hits Historic Low.  An exodus of African-Americans from struggling industrial cities such as Detroit and the growth of Sunbelt states have pushed racial segregation in U.S. metropolitan areas to its lowest level in a century, according to a new study.  The report, released by the conservative Manhattan Institute, said U.S. cities are more integrated now than at any time since 1910, based on analysis of census data from neighborhoods.

Court throws out judge-drawn Texas electoral maps.  The Supreme Court on Friday [1/20/2012] threw out electoral maps drawn by federal judges in Texas that favored minorities.

The Minority Myth.  Consider one of the newest subsets of Americans in recent years:  the African-American.  This hyphenate grew out of trying to find a more dignified way of describing black people (past words like "colored" or "negro" summon bitter, knee-jerk responses).  This term, however, is not very accurate because it is used to specifically describe a person's skin color.  Personally, one of the few, truly African-Americans I know is white.  She was born and grew up there before coming to the states.  (Yes, Africa has white citizens.)

Best Opportunity for America in 50 Years.  The media is pretty silent about this, but the real estate crisis which has plagued us for the past 3 years and will hang over us for the next few was caused and promoted by none other than the U.S. government.  In an effort to get poor people into housing, the government coerced banks into giving loans to people who would never qualify under other circumstances.  They did this by threatening banks with loss of their charters if they did not make more loans to minorities.

Racial Sensitivity Through the Looking Glass.  We've reached the point where people can't make observations about the world around them without being labeled racist.

Obama and the Coming Democalypse.  In the last century and a half America has mixed it up with Reconstruction, Jim Crow, red-lining, civil rights, school desegregation, school busing, affirmative action, diversity, the Community Reinvestment Act, "affordable housing," and two "first black presidents."  The whole point of politics is to "do something."

The "TV Gap" Cripples Minority Kids.  A powerfully disturbing new report by the Kaiser Family Foundation shows that black and Hispanic kids consume 4½ more hours of media every day than their white counterparts -- investing a startling total of more than 90 hours a week on television, video games, social networking and other distractions.  "It's clear that, overall, American youth spend an enormous amount of time with media, but minorities spend most of their waking hours with media," says study director Ellen Wartella, head of the Center on Media and Human Development at Northwestern University.  The chief culprit is television, of course:  black youngsters spend more than 41 hours a week watching the tube, while white kids devote less than 25 hours per week.

A Look Back At The Great Church Fire Propaganda Campaign.  Fifteen summers ago, America's news media informed us that black churches throughout the South were being torched by white racists.  The purported wave of arsons dominated the airwaves and generated thousands of newspaper articles.  Pundits, politicians and preachers decried the terrorism and the hate it represented.  In fact, it never happened.

As gov't plays 'father,' 'black males have become dispensable'.  In an appearance on Thursday night's [6/2/2011] "Stossel" on the Fox Business Network, [Walter E.] Williams argued that welfare has done more damage to black society than slavery or Jim Crow.  "[T]he welfare state has done to black Americans what slavery could not have done, the harshest Jim Crow laws and racism could not have done, namely break up the black family," Williams said.  "That is, today, just slightly over 30 percent of black kids live in two parent families.  Historically, from 1870s on up to about 1940s, and depending on the city, 75 to 90 percent of black kids lived in two parent families.  Illegitimacy rate is 70 percent among blacks where that is unprecedented in our history."

The End of an Idea — Why Affirmative Action Should Stop.  Is there a color-coded graph somewhere that says the darker one is, the more consideration one is due?  Apparently not — given that most East Asians and Arabs are not usually extended affirmative action status.  OK, but do third-generation affluent Japanese-Americans qualify for preferences on the rationale that their parents as children were interned in camps in the American West; or fifth-generation Chinese because their great-great-grandparents were treated horribly while building the transcontinental railroad?

Osama Bin Laden's Anti-U.S. Strategy: Exploit Minority Converts.  According to materials in the cache of documents recovered in the U.S. Navy SEAL raid that brought down the terror leader, bin Laden planned to specifically recruit African-American Muslim converts to carry out attacks on the homeland.  The goal was to not only kill and maim in the actual operations, but to create a divisiveness that would cause more damage than al Qaeda could ever hope to do on their own.

Osama Bin Laden's strategy sounds familiar.  Wait just a minute, captured documents reveal that Osama Bin Laden wanted to use race and class warfare to weaken America?  Isn't that what the Democratic Party has been doing for the past half century?

UVA Afraid to Prosecute Lying Law Student.  A 25-year old University of Virginia law student Johnathan Perkins wrote a detailed account of police harassment and racial profiling in an April 22 Letter to the Editor of Virginia Law Weekly.  Naturally, the prestigious university began an investigation that culminated in Perkin's May 2 admission that he made the whole thing up in order "to bring attention to police misconduct." ... Despite the false allegations no charges will be filed against Perkins.

The Editor says...
Imagine what would have happened if a white guy had done the same thing.

The Curious Case of the Lying Law Student.  Attorney General Eric Holder will give the commencement address at the University of Virginia Law School.  Yes, the same institution where Johnathan Perkins is set to graduate May 22 despite the fact that he lied to UVA police, the university community, and Albemarle County.

7 Topics We Can't Have Adult Conversations About in America.  [#6]  Racism:  At what point can we all stop pretending that America hasn't done a 180 degree turn-around on race issues since the sixties?  People yell "racism" so much these days that you'd think Democrats like Bull Connor and George Wallace are still around persecuting black Americans.  Could we start by perhaps acknowledging that affirmative action is immoral government-sponsored racism against white Americans that undermines the achievements of all African Americans?  Is it worth discussing the possibility that the sky-high illegitimacy rate in black America is ten times more of a factor in their problems than racism?  How many black Americans fail simply because they've been told their entire lives that they're victims and that the deck is stacked against them?  How about black racism?  Louis Farrakhan, who's well liked in black America, is as much of a scumbag as a KKK leader and everyone knows black Americans supported Obama over Clinton purely because of his skin color.

Black Education:  [Scroll down]  Another part of the black education disaster has to do with the home environment.  More than 70 percent of black children are born to unwedded mothers, who are often themselves born to unwedded mothers.  Today's level of female-headed households is new in black history.  Until the 1950s, almost 80 percent of black children lived in two-parent households, as opposed to today's 35 percent.  Often, these unwedded mothers have poor parenting skills and are indifferent, and sometimes hostile, to their children's education.  The resulting poorly behaving students should not be permitted to sabotage the education of students whose parents are supportive of the education process.

Rep. Allen West — and the Congressional Black Caucus.  Of all the developments worth following these days, from the vigorous Republican insurgency to the apathetic Obama presidency, I'd like to add another:  the relationship between the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) and Republican freshman Allen West of Florida.  West, 50, is the first Republican to join the CBC since Congressman Gary Franks of Connecticut.

Race, Propaganda, and Schoolkids:  A new exhibit opened this week at the Boston Museum of Science called "RACE — Are we so different?"  [Caps in original.]  The exhibit offers a fascinating window into the fun-house mirror world of race theorists, racial "scholars," and a good part of the anthropology profession.  Even a sympathetic reviewer in the Boston Globe admits that "there's a wearying didacticism to the show," and it's no surprise that the didactic lessons about race are all slanted toward the left.

Black Education Disaster.  SAT scores confirm the poor education received by blacks.  In 2009, average SAT reading test scores were:  whites (528), Asians (516) and blacks (429).  In math it was whites (536), Asians (587) and blacks (426).  Twelve years of fraudulent primary and secondary education received by most blacks are not erased by four or five years of college.  This is evidenced by examination scores taken for admission to graduate schools.

Black Republican: Black Caucus preaches victimization and dependency.  Congressman-elect Allen West (R-Fla.), who said he plans to become the only black Republican in the Congressional Black Caucus, accused the organization of failing the black community by promoting dependence on government welfare programs.  "The Congressional Black Caucus cannot continue to be a monolithic voice that promotes these liberal social welfare policies and programs that are failing in the Black community, that are preaching victimization and dependency, that's not the way that we should go," West said on Fox News Friday [11/19/2010].

Let's Take This Country Back.  One thing is for sure:  Black Democrats love handouts.  They know that the Congressional Black Caucus will continue to fight for these handouts, which black Democrats now consider "entitlements."  Payback for slavery.  These days anything black Democrats want is considered an entitlement.  Gucci purses and 60-inch flat-screen TVs in their taxpayer-funded, government-gifted homes — all are entitlements.  For black Democrats, the government is supposed to provide food, shelter, clothing, cars (tricked out, of course), cable TV and PlayStations (the in-home babysitters), childcare, health care, and, of course, a check.

The Truth about Obama's Muslim 'Faith'.  As many know, there once was a great boxer named Cassius Clay.  He converted to Islam in 1964, seemingly bothered that Jesus was portrayed as "a white with blond hair and blue eyes," as he put it, and took the name "Muhammad Ali."  Of course, the irony of this is that despite being intensely aware of his slave roots, Ali rejected the name of an abolitionist (Clay) and took the name of a slave-owner (Muhammad).  It also perhaps eluded him that Christians were the first ones to outlaw slavery, while Muslims give black Africans rope and chains to this day.  But I mention this because Ali's path is a common one in the black community; it is why we've long had the Black Muslims and why Islamic names are so common among American blacks.  Many blacks have bought the bill of goods that Christianity is the white man's religion, the faith of oppressors.  And they embrace Islam as part of a rejection of "white" society.

Slaves on the Government Plantation.  At a recent press event sponsored by the Tea Party Express, some of America's most prominent leaders in the movement spoke out about race and charges of racism being hurled at the tea parties by the Obama administration, the Congressional Black Caucus and the NAACP.  In his remarks at the event, former Reagan administration ambassador Alan Keyes spoke of "rampant exploitation of the history of black Americans" by the Obama administration, using race as an instrument of political war to enslave all Americans.

A Liberal Judge Lights a Fuse.  Look what the culture war has done to liberals.  Seventy years ago liberals set out to fight against the white Southern obsession with race.  Now, after America elected a black president, liberals can think of nothing but race.

Why Young Black Males Are Not Graduating High School.  A new report from the Schott Foundation reveals that only 47 percent of black male students earn a high school diploma on time.  Ironically, this report came out shortly after Judge Vaughn Walker ruled regarding Proposition 8 in California.  If the statements on which Judge Walker based his ruling are "facts," how do we explain what is happening educationally to boys in the black community where a large majority are growing up without fathers?

Fat Black Kids Showcase America's Racism.  The most recent statement by Michelle Obama baffles me, as she compared black children's health to the age old Democrat policies of slavery and Jim Crow laws:  ... Imagine my surprise to learn that one can recognize racist policies caused fat black kids.  Here I thought racism was when black men intimidating white voters are not prosecuted for obvious voter intimidation, by a black Attorney General, simply because the perpetrators were black.  I erroneously believed that racism had occurred when a black president speaks out (without any facts) on behalf of a black professor behaving badly, and who is given preference over a white cop doing his job.

America's Ruling Class — And the Perils of Revolution.  [Scroll down]  By 1853, when Sen. John Pettit of Ohio called "all men are created equal" "a self-evident lie," much of America's educated class had already absorbed the "scientific" notion (which Darwin only popularized) that man is the product of chance mutation and natural selection of the fittest.  Accordingly, by nature, superior men subdue inferior ones as they subdue lower beings or try to improve them as they please.  Hence while it pleased the abolitionists to believe in freeing Negroes and improving them, it also pleased them to believe that Southerners had to be punished and reconstructed by force.  As the 19th century ended, the educated class's religious fervor turned to social reform:  they were sure that because man is a mere part of evolutionary nature, man could be improved, and that they, the most highly evolved of all, were the improvers.

Pigford v. Glickman:  86,000 claims from 39,697 total farmers?  If there are only 39,697 African-American farmers grand total in the entire country, then how can over 86,000 of them claim discrimination at the hands of the USDA?  Where did the other 46,303 come from?

Real Sherrod Story Still Untold.  [Scroll down]  The major media reported the settlement as though it were the signing of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.  For the last forty years, as the civil rights industry has manufactured more and more absurd grievances — most notably the Tea Party smear that incited Breitbart's reprisal — the media have reported on them with increasingly wide-eyed innocence.  In the various stories on the settlement, not one reporter that I could identify stopped to do the math. ... Although 86,000 black farmers are alleged to have received payments, at no time in the last three decades have there been more than 40,000 black farmers.  Nor is there much turnover in the farming business.

Obama Wants $1.25 B to Compensate up to 66,000 African American Farmers.  President Barack Obama is requesting $1.15 billion from Congress — to add to a $100-million earmark he pushed through Congress in 2008 when he was a senator — to create a $1.25 billion federal fund to settle discrimination claims by what the Justice Department says is 66,000 African Americans who "farmed or attempted to farm" and were allegedly the victims of discrimination committed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) during the period from Jan. 1, 1981 to Dec. 31, 1996.

Update:
Shirley Sherrod sues Andrew Breitbart over video he posted.  Shirley Sherrod has filed a defamation suit against Andrew Breitbart, the conservative gadfly she alleges triggered her firing by the Obama administration and ignited a national debate on race and reverse discrimination.

Our Problems are Not in the Atmosphere, But On the Earth.  A delegation of 20 black mayors representing the National Conference of Black Mayors arrived in Washington, DC to lobby congress to pass legislation to promote "clean energy."  According to the delegation's press release, they want "a national plan to move their cities to become more energy efficient, reduce pollution and create new clean energy jobs and businesses."  But is black unemployment twice the national unemployment rate because of carbon emissions?

Civil Rights of My Fathers.  Times have changed, but people have not.  Today, the word "justice" is used to mask opportunism, while falsehoods ooze from the government media to dupe the uninformed.  Is being free from responsibility truly freedom?  It is not.  This progressive socialist dream ends in the sad hopelessness of dependence and slavery.  The groups have changed, but the theme remains the same.  This time, socialists are in power, using race and class as a weapon to justify theft from all American taxpayers to buy influence and reward their supporters with the spoils of their treachery.

America's new N-word is lightning rod.  [Scroll down]  "Whites succumb to Negrophilia when, believing that people of color are somehow more benevolent and less corruptible than themselves, they develop an undue affinity for them," says [Erik] Rush.  "Blacks suffer worse.  They're denied accountability for their own actions," he continues.  "They're shackled with accepting the nobility — no matter how lacking — of all black 'leaders.'  They're ripe for the 'rescue' of predatory, opportunistic members of the black community — in concert with white politicians scheming for personal enrichment."

Can black Americans afford Obama?  Early indications suggest that the Barack Obama presidency might turn out to be similar to the failed presidency of Jimmy Carter.  That's bad news for the nation but especially bad news for black Americans.  No white presidential candidate had to live down the disgraced presidency of Carter but I'm all too fearful that a future black presidential candidate will find himself carrying the heavy baggage of a failed black president.

Are Liberals Breaking Up with Obama?  [Scroll down]  At the end of the day, every one of these folks who rallied the votes for Obama — based on nothing but his skin color and teleprompted eloquence — have done far more damage to the cause of African-American parity than if they had refused to indulge their identity politics and had looked at the candidate's bona fides with a skeptical, purely investigative eye.

How Is Rigging Elections Fair to Immigrants?  A Nebraska town wants renters to prove they are in the country legally, and Port Chester, N.Y., was forced to swallow a goofy voting scheme that makes sense only if the aim is to erase the distinction between legal and illegal immigrants.  Under the plan, imposed by a federal judge in response to a 2006 Justice Department civil-rights suit, each voter in the board of trustees election got six votes.  A voter could give all six votes to one candidate, or divide them among several.

Slaves to the government dole.  Throughout our history, politicians and pundits have often said "America is at a crossroads."  Sometimes it was true, as in the final convulsive years leading up to the Civil War when we decided to end slavery.  New data on personal income, taxes and dependency makes clear that the country is again at a historic crossroad and another form of slavery is the central issue.  There are no iron chains involved this time, but dependence on government for economic sustenance is no less an enslavement.

The Abolition of the Family:  [Scroll down slowly]  It is not by accident that over 70% of black children in America are born out of wedlock.  Almost 50% of young black men in America are unemployed.  And without a job, a man has no incentive to start or remain with his family.  The Obama administration has done next to nothing to stimulate those parts of the economy that provide employment for young men and, therefore, protect and strengthen the family.  This is the dirtiest and nastiest of not-so-secret secrets that no one seems to want to address.

The Right To Discriminate.  [Scroll down]  When I was selecting a marriage partner, I systematically discriminated against white women, Asian women and women of other ethnicities that I found less preferable.  The Nation of Islam discriminates against white members.  The Aryan Brotherhood discriminates against having black members.  The Ku Klux Klan discriminates against having Catholic and Jewish members.  The NFL discriminates against hiring female quarterbacks.  The NAACP National Board of Directors, at least according to the photo on their Web page, has no white members.

Hypocrisy in the Liberal Establishment.  It is absolutely clear that in 2010 conservative and Republican American blacks can't express their views without fear of reprisal and retaliation.  Is this the intent of the Civil Rights movement that blacks can only be free if they agree with the Democratic Party way of thinking?

The Black Church's Commitment to Obama.  Ninety-six percent of black voters, many of whom are Christians, cast their votes for Barack Obama.  I question:  Did your desire to see a black man in the White House trump your commitment to Christ and Christian values and principles? ... My family and most of my black friends are Christians striving to live lives which honor Christ.  And yet, there is a huge disconnect between their Christianity and their irrational, blind, and near-idol-worship of Obama.  Will the truth about Obama make a difference?  For some, I think not.  For those of you who value your commitment to Christ more than your loyalty to skin color, here are a few facts.

Black Americans and Liberty.  The heroic civil rights movement, culminating with the 1964 Civil Rights Act, put an end to the grossest abuses of personal liberties, but government evolved into a subtler enemy.  Visit any major city and one would find that the overwhelmingly law-abiding members of the black community are living in constant fear of robbery, assault and murder.  In fact, 52 percent of U.S. homicides are committed by blacks, 49 percent of homicide victims are black and 93 percent of them were murdered by fellow blacks.  The level of crime in black communities is the result of government's failure to perform its most basic function, namely the protection of its citizens.

Black students' field trip draws parents' anger in Michigan.  A school district in Michigan is defending its intentions after a field trip by African-American elementary students drew complaints from excluded children and their parents.

The Editor says...
Imagine the uproar if a public school scheduled a field trip for whites only.

Tyranny May Be Closer than We Think.  Nancy Pelosi, the most arrogant and polarizing Speaker in the history of the House, dismissed the Tea Party as nothing more than "disheartened Republicans and racists, who could not accept a bi-racial man as president."  Similarly, the mainstream media and Democrat activists, evidently taking their orders from the Speaker's office, tried to portray the health care debate as being based solely on President Obama's race rather than on the policies of an overreaching government.  Therefore, we are in the bizarre position of having the first black POTUS, while being constantly scolded for being racist.

The Editor says...
Well, let's not make that mistake again.  Since we will be branded as racists in any case, why continue with "affirmative action"?

Race and Politics:  Few combinations are more poisonous than race and politics.  That combination has torn whole nations apart and led to the slaughters of millions in countries around the world.

Race and Politics:  Part II.  No dogma has caused more mischief — and, in some countries, tragedies — than the notion that there is something strange and wrong when some groups are "over-represented" or "under-represented" in some occupations or institutions.  This dogma is so widely accepted, and so deeply entrenched, that no one asks for evidence and no speck of evidence is offered.  Moreover, tons of evidence to the contrary are ignored.

Race and Politics:  Part IV.  One of the most ominous developments of our time has been the multicultural dogma that all cultures are equal.  It is one of the many unsubstantiated assertions that have become fashionable among self-congratulatory elites, with hard evidence being neither asked for nor offered.

How the Civil Rights Movement Jumped the Shark.  There is no reason in 21st century America on an issue that is not a black or white or a civil rights issue to have a bloc of black people walk slowly through a mostly white crowd to make a racial point.  The walk in and of itself — with two of the participants holding their handheld cameras above their heads hoping to document "proof" — was an act of racism meant to create a contrast between the tea party crowd and themselves.

The soft bigotry of low expectations, blackboard jungle edition.  The Obama administration's Department of Education has announced that it will crack down on "civil-rights infractions" in public schools, including alleged disparities in the disciplining of white and black students.  The notion behind this initiative is that black students are disproportionately subjected to discipline they don't deserve.  That doesn't seem to be the case in the Philadelphia public school system, however.  There, as Abigail Thernstrom and Tim Fay report, it appears that African American students frequently harass and attack Asian students without consequence.

Listen to the Panther.  As Eldridge Cleaver understood, when the individual is crushed, so is his sense of self-respect and self-reliance.  Since LBJ's Great Society initiatives, billions of dollars have been spent augmenting the state in relation to the individual lives of most black Americans.  Is Colbert King happy with the results?  Is socialized medicine as important to the black community as the staggering numbers of children who grow up without a father in the home?

The soft bigotry of low expectations.  The Obama administration's Department of Education has announced that it will crack down on "civil-rights infractions" in public schools, including alleged disparities in the disciplining of white and black students.  This means that the administration will identify and investigate situations in which a facially neutral discipline system — offense X brings punishment Y — results in blacks being discplined more often than whites.  School systems will face the prospect of being punished unless they can explain the disparities, presumably based on a painstaking analysis of each disciplinary decision.

It's the Culture, Stupid.  [Scroll down]  With blacks overrepresented among single parent families — by 1993, 57 percent of black children were growing up in a single-parent household, as compared to 21 percent of white children — white homeownership rates inevitably outstripped those for black homeownership.  In the early 1990s, that gap was at least 25 percentage points, typically around 70 percent for whites and in the low 40s for blacks.  The Clintons and their allies, however, refused to acknowledge family breakdown as a problem, let alone as an explanation for the disparity in homeownership rates.  Their preferred explanation for just about everything unpleasant was the inevitable "racism."

WaPo/Henry Louis Gates Website Wants to Write Black Conservatives Out of Black History.  As Black History Month draws to a close, the web site The Root has chosen to publish a hateful article that demeans black conservatives solely for their political views — grouping them with brutal dictators, convicted criminals and self-centered celebrities.

Housing as Busing.  With a Westchester decision, the feds decree that neighborhoods must seek minority residents.

Michelle Obama, Liberal Government and Obesity:  Even holding steady for all other factors, research concludes that poor black women and their children are the most disproportionately affected by skyrocketing obesity rates.  The largest single indicator for poverty and, later, dropping out of high school is birth to an unmarried mother.  Unmarried women and their children are the largest recipient group of welfare state entitlement programs and also the group most rigidly trapped in failing government schools.  In 2007, 72% of all black children born in the USA, were born out of wedlock.

Blacks, Youths, and CPAC:  At CPAC, I saw an army of young, brilliant, and enthusiastic conservatives waiting in the wings for their opportunities to fight.  I met proud, grateful black Americans who did not drink the Obama Kool-Aid and instead are eagerly pursuing their dreams.

The Fraud of Progressive Nobility:  Amid a finger-pointing blame fest, "minority advocates" still supply the crutches on which minorities lean.  For instance, affirmative action strengthens the haplessness in "protected classes" that motivated liberals to "protect" those classes in the first place.  Interestingly, Johns Hopkins and Syracuse Universities researchers found that immigrant black children attend college at a 25 percent higher rate, and upper echelon schools at a four times higher rate, than multigenerational African-American children.

We Have Race on the Brain.  Intermarriage and assimilation should have made racial lines almost meaningless. Barack Obama, Valerie Jarrett, and Eric Holder talk about being black; but they are not nearly so in comparison to my Sikh neighbors in the Central Valley, who both are darker and, I imagine, have had harder childhoods.  (What constitutes being "black," or are we back to the Old Confederacy for the one-sixteenth rule?)

Under Barack Obama, US is obsessed with race but can't talk about it.  American politicians have got themselves into a real bind.  They have to fret constantly about race but cannot talk honestly about it.

Black Education.  Standard psychobabble asserts a positive relationship between the race of teachers and administrators and student performance.  That's nonsense.  Black academic performance is the worst in the very cities where large percentages of teachers and administrators are black, and often the school superintendent is black, the mayor is black, most of the city council is black and very often the chief of police is black.

Berkeley's Unbearable Whiteness of Science.  The racial madness that has left-wing America in its thrall finds its apogee in the Berkeley, California public schools.  Berkeley High School is now poised to eliminate science laboratory classes because "science labs were largely classes for white students."

Black History Month Should Be about Black History.  [Scroll down]  I mean, after all, it is a part of history.  But what is so wrong is that these race exploiters imply that current race relations in America have not come very far from the days of blacks being lynched.  Thus, Black History Month in reality is the liberal democrats' annual fundraiser and promo campaign for more entitlement programs.

King had a dream, but blacks now face a nightmare.  When was the last time you heard anyone express outrage over the fact that up to half of the black kids in major cities are high school dropouts?  Black America is in a state of crisis and not only are we being ignored by those for whom we vote, we are being ignored by the press and the "civil rights movement".

The Boys Who Cry Racism.  [Scroll down]  Those liberals who've lately been issuing the racism charge so promiscuously (speaking of aberrant hearts and minds) are aiming it not at skinheads living in their parents' basements or at would-be Klansmen, but at decent Americans with the temerity to object to presidential policies that they believe would damage both the quality of their lives and the nation itself:  in short, at Americans acting in the best tradition of democratic citizenship.  This is so preposterous that literally millions who've never before given the matter any thought are taking notice.

Imagined ethnicity and Obama:  It is "black" Americans who pay the highest price for living under the dominion of the exploitative political class which Obama now exemplifies — and which another Hawaii student has just begun to discover.

Before Dreams, There Was Roots.  As evidence mounts that Obama did not exactly write Dreams unassisted, [Rocco] Landesman gives us a good indication of how America's cultural honchos will react.  For a century, in fact, they have been heaping uncritical praise on undeserving artists of a certain political stripe, especially minority artists.  And for a century, they have been pulling the curtain shut behind their pet wizards when anyone questions their wizardry.

Top Ten Reasons Black America Fears Rush Limbaugh.  [#10] If you want to believe blacks are eternal victims in America, do not listen to Rush Limbaugh.  [#9] If you do not want to take responsibility for your life, do not listen to Rush Limbaugh.  [#8] If you are a dead beat loser who voted for Obama in hope of him redistributing what others worked for to you, do not listen to Rush Limbaugh.

Why is the Left so angry at Blacks who love America?  I stated three things in [a CNN] interview.  One, I refer to myself as an American rather than a hyphenated African-American.  Two, the tea party protests are against President Obama's policies, not his race.  The protesters are decent hardworking concerned citizens.  Three, the American people are not racist.  These statements inspired immediate outrage from the so-called tolerant and compassionate Left.  An email from a self proclaimed Marxist threatened physical harm to me. ... A creative leftist called me a "Toxic Negro".  Another called me a "sell out".

The R-bomb:  Are You A Racist?  Racism today belongs to a class of words whose definitions have remarkably little fixed meaning.  But racism once described unwholesome behavior that on its own was measurable — like refusing to sell your home to members of certain minorities.  Somewhere along the line, what began to identify racism seems to have changed, from the behavior itself, to whether someone took offense.

Is Disagreement with Obama Racism?  When one says that race is no longer the problem it once was, it is not the same as saying that there are not major problems that confront a large segment of the black population.  Grossly fraudulent education is a major problem but it has nothing to do with racial discrimination as evidenced by the fact that the worse education received is in the very cities where blacks dominate the political structure.  Crime is a major problem but it has nothing to do with racial discrimination, particularly in light of the fact that blacks commit most of the violent crime in America and well over 90 percent of their victims are black.  The fact of a 70 percent illegitimacy rate and only 35 percent of black children raised in two-parent homes is a major problem but it has nothing to do with racial discrimination.

5 Reasons Obama's Election Is Bad For Race Relations:  [#1]  Black Democrats put race first to elect Obama:  It's no longer a surprise when black Democrats vote as an almost monolithic block for Democratic candidates over Republicans.  It's just something that has come to be expected.  However, when black Americans started voting for Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton by the same lopsided margins that people normally saw in general elections, it sent a simple message:  With black Americans, race comes first.  If white Americans felt the same way, there's certainly no way that Barack Obama could ever have been elected President.

Inner cities provide a snapshot of America's future.  Blacks are not given enough credit for being trendsetters in America.  Blacks started playing the blues, jazz, and R&B, then the rest of America started playing them.  Blacks discovered the politics of victimhood, then the rest of America started catching on.  Black women got into having babies without marriage.  Then white women started getting into it and the incidence of white out-of-wedlock births today — almost 30 percent — is higher than the black rate in the 1960's.  Blacks bought into dependency and the welfare state.  Now the rest of America has bought in.

Why I am no longer an African American.  As a black woman in the Age of Obama, I don't see anything that reveals that Blacks in America have anything to celebrate. ... It is obvious that the inspiration for the classification of African American has nothing to do with those born of African descent.  It is a radical group of Black Americans who hold to the anti-American views of those shared by Jeremiah Wright, Professor Gates, Jesse Jackson, President Obama and many others who came out of the radical Civil Rights Movement.  Because of these things, I now part ways with the classification of African American because I hold no allegiance to Africa.

Happy Now, Mr. Holder?  What a mess.  Everyone is electrified by the pervasive racism in the air, yet not one racist statement or action can be pinpointed amid the ambi-directional outrage.  Near misses are everywhere.  Serena Williams blows up at a U.S. Open line judge of a different ethnicity.  Rapper Kanye West interrupts the award acceptance speech of a white singer only to praise her black competitor.  A white teen is beaten up by two black teens on a school bus in Illinois and the mostly black teenage audience cheers.  But those stories, from the worlds of sports, entertainment, and adolescence serve as the collective backdrop for the main near-miss events at the heart of American government.

The Obsolescence of a Slur.  Are Obama's critics really racists?  It is a serious charge.  If true, it means the hope of a color-blind society is essentially over after a half-century of civil-rights progress.  If false, it means that we have institutionalized vicious smears as legitimate political tactics — and, in the process, discredited the entire dialogue that surrounds racial prejudice.  How do we determine the accuracy of the "racism" charges?

Tiger Woods:  The First $1B Athlete.  Tiger Woods had two reasons to celebrate his victory at the FedEx Cup in Atlanta last Sunday.  Not only did he earn another trophy, he set another record as well, becoming the first athlete to top $1 billion in career earnings, according to Forbes magazine.

Questions Even Glenn Beck Hasn't Asked.  [Scroll down]  Why, in 2009 America, are mulattoes invariably identified as blacks?  Surely there is nothing wrong with being a mulatto.  There is no stigma attached, as once there was.  It merely refers to those who have one white parent and one black.

Dear White Liberal America:  Thank you very, very much.  You see us poor helpless inferior blacks (oh forgive me, I must be politically correct, "African Americans"), and you want to help us using your superior intellect.  After all, we could not possibly succeed in this racist, homophobic and greedy country without your assistance.

Obama's Well Organized Community Is Falling Apart.  Obama has spent an entire lifetime surrounded by some of the world's worst thugs.  If he is unable to move their agenda forward, his life will be at risk from within his own ranks. ... Even though I oppose everything Obama is and everything he stands for, I pray for his safety.  You can bet your last dollar... his well organized community is falling apart as his agenda begins to crumble.  They will be very motivated to ignite a second civil war as they watch their agenda die a brutal political death.

Is Profiling Racist?  Because of a correlation between race, sex and disease, the physician is using a cheap-to-observe characteristic, such as race or sex, as an estimate for a more costly-to-observe characteristic, the presence of a disease.  The physician is practicing both race and sex profiling.  Does that make the physician a racist or sexist?  Should he be brought up on charges of racial discrimination because he's guessing that his black patients are more likely to suffer from prostate cancer?  Should sex discrimination or malpractice suits be brought against physicians who prescribe routine mammograms for their female patients but not their male patients?

Who's a Racist?  Do Barack Obama and the Democrat Party foster racism and use it as a political tool?  The cold, hard truth that no one on the Left wants to admit is that they do.

More about liberals and minorities.

Black Radicals Cite Racism and Capitalism as Causes of Black Troubles.  [Carl] Dix and [Cornel] West are living embodiments of the leftist worldview which holds that all human pathology is rooted, ultimately, in the external world, in the society at large, rather than within the hearts and minds of individual people.  This axiom leads, logically, to the leftist precept that the only way to improve the lives of the masses is not merely to tinker around the edges, but rather to structurally transform the foundational institutions of the nation — most especially its capitalist economic system.

Impersonating a Victim.  This past March 29th, Professor Henry Louis Gates was being interviewed in front of a small group by Walter Isaacson on C-SPAN's Book TV.  Thirty-three minutes into the discussion about his new book on Lincoln, Professor Gates began a detailed account of his own genealogy.  He said that in doing so he had discovered he was about "50% white".  He said that this was quote, "To my astonishment and horror...".  He continued by saying that he had subsequently sent his DNA off to be tested.  This time, upon finding out he was "57% white", he said again, "to my horror .... I was becoming more white by the minute".  To this Gates, Isaacson and everyone else there chuckled.  Something tells me that if Mr. Isaacson had said that he also had sent his DNA off and found that to his "astonishment and horror" he was 57% black, no one would chuckle, least of all the Professor of African American Studies at Harvard, Dr. Gates.

The Reality of Black Crime.  I'll be ready to concede that "race" — defined, per Obama, Holder, Ogletree, and Gates, as racism and skin color — remains a significant factor in social outcomes when the same proportion of black children as white children are raised in two-parent, married households without greatly lowering the black poverty rate, or when black crime drops to white and Asian levels without proportionally reducing the black prison population.  Until we conduct that experiment, though — which is wholly within the capacity of individuals to do — I'll remain skeptical that the race activists' favorite "race issues" are predominantly the consequence of white Americans' atavistic bigotry.

Cop killer hailed as 'Muslim martyr'.  [Scroll down]  What these groups say is that any killing of whites, including in this case Clemmons' cold-blooded murder of officers Renninger, Owens, Griswald, and Richards, is "a legitimate protest".  Black Male Felon celebrates the killings as "Brother Maurice Clemmons' daring stand against white police terrorism."  The theme of National Black Foot Soldiers is captured in the slogan:  "When whites pay reparations there will be no more black on white crime."

When will White America be off the Hook for Sins of the Past?  Oprah, a black woman, is the richest and most influential woman in America and possibly the world. ... Did I mention that the president of the United States of America is a black man?  With blacks only 13% of the U.S. population, none of these extraordinary black achievements could have happened without tremendous support from white America.  So, when will white America be off the hook for sins of the past?

No wonder black America doesn't have a clue.  While flipping through the channels with my remote, I stopped on the movie "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" on BET (Black Entertainment Television).  Excellent movie.  During a commercial break, they gave a news update.  An announcer said, "They tried to get the Bronx kid, Sonia Sotomayor, but she beat them."  There was not one mention of Sotomayor's controversial racist statements.  Thus, ill-informed black viewers who don't follow the news closely are led to conclude that those "evil racist white Republicans" are at it again trying to block a person of color.

More Scandals Haunt Sotomayor.  False accusations against white people are tolerated by the media, even the conservative media.  This is why Al Sharpton is a frequent guest on the O'Reilly show, despite his participation in the Tawana Brawley hoax, whereby he falsely accused a group of white men of raping a black woman.  But accurate accusations of racism against members of minority groups who make racist statements are not tolerated.

How About A National Conversation on Race Hoaxes?  [Scroll down]  We wouldn't have known about this case at all if the professor, Henry Louis Gates Jr., hadn't blast e-mailed the universe that he was harassed by racist cops.  Gates thought it would be a feather in his cap, not realizing there are huge areas of the country where people don't think it's heroic to browbeat cops checking on you after you break into your own house, such as 99 percent of the country outside of Cambridge.

Why Racialism?  Why is Sonia Sotomayor allowed to get away with being described, or describing herself as "non-white"?  I thought, as every MSM or government report on any race statistics puts it:  "Hispanics can be of any race."  She looks strikingly like my wife's in-laws — Italian.  Are Italians not "white"?

King Family Takes Fees From Funds Raised for the MLK Memorial Project.  The family of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. has charged the foundation building a monument to the civil rights leader on the National Mall about $800,000 for the use of his words and image — an arrangement one leading scholar says King would have found offensive.

Race Talk for "African-Americans".  What to call black people has to be confusing to white people.  Having been around for 73 years, I have been through a number of names.  Among the polite ones are: colored, Negro, Afro-American, black, and now African-American.  Among those names, African-American is probably the most unintelligent.

Instituting a Safeguard Against Political & Ideological Tyranny.  It is fairly clear, to anyone paying attention, that the people of the United States are currently suffering the political tyranny of the special interest minority. ... Instead of celebrating the hybrid identity that is American and standing as one people in support and defense of a singular culture we have become a country of hyphenated Americans all too willing to put our individual and special interest needs ahead of honest politics, good government and Americanism.

Of course he's a socialist.  [President Obama]  apparently believes that the people of color of all races — Chinese, Malays, Native Americans, Cubans, Hawaiians, Andaman Islanders, Indonesians, Eskimos, Philipinos, Africans, and even Muslims — have been systematically persecuted by whites.  That is bizarrely wrong as a point of fact, if you just look at the actual majority of Asian kids in some of the best American universities today; or if you look at the decades of foreign aid Americans have given to poor nations.

Uncle sam redefines "parents" -- problem solved!
Black Families Showing Gains?  The New York Times headline "2-Parent Black Families Showing Gains," Wednesday seemed like great news.  After decades of decline, more black kids are finally growing up with their mothers and fathers!  Alas, check out the third paragraph of the piece:  "The Census Bureau attributed an indeterminate amount of the increase to revised definitions adopted in 2007, which identify as parents any man and woman living together, whether or not they are married or the child's biological parents."

Re: Holder's Shame.  The elephant in the room in discussions of race isn't white prejudice; it's the breakdown of the black family and all the attendant social pathologies that emanate from it.  When 7-out-of-10 black babies are born to single women and more than half of black children spend most of their childhood without a father at home, there are consequences:  lower academic performance, more juvenile delinquency and adult crime, more dependence on government assistance, and a greater likelihood to repeat the cycle again by having more children born out of wedlock to the next generation.  Yet virtually no one in the black community in any position of authority and responsibility is willing to talk about this issue.

White guilt? Done; over; history.  There's a massive silver lining in the magical clouds that lofted Barack Obama to the presidency.  For today, without a shred of intellectually legitimate opposition, I can loudly proclaim to America:  The Era of White Guilt is over.  This seemingly impossible event occurred because the vast majority of white Americans didn't give a fluff about skin color and enthusiastically pulled the voting lever for a black man.  Not just any black man.  A very liberal black man who spent his early career race-hustling banks, praying in a racist church for 20 years, and actively working with America-hating domestic terrorists.  Yet white Americans made Barack Obama their leader.  Therefore, as of Nov. 4, 2008, white guilt is dead.

Should Obama's replacement be black?  Although Barack Obama's historic election will place an African-American in the White House, it will reduce the number of African-Americans in the Senate to zero.  That's an even lonelier number than one, and it is not a number that this nation should be proud of.  So the question is:  Does Obama's replacement in the Senate have to be black?

The Editor says...
Evidently the author believes that skin color is a candidate's primary qualification.  The last thing this country needs is a racial quota in the Senate.  Nor should there be an assumption that only blacks can represent certain parts of the country.

The End Of Racism?  Sure, there are racists.  There are also rust and mosquitoes, and there always will be.  Life goes on.  I know — what about "societal" racism?  Well, if we can now relax about the backward folk "out there," then maybe Obama in the White House can help open up an honest discussion about the role racism does not play in black communities' problems.

The chilling and cowardly words of Eric Holder:  Attorney General Eric Holder thinks Americans are "a nation of cowards" on matters of race.  This is the same Holder who kowtowed to Bill Clinton to help secure Clinton's pardon of fugitive financier Marc Rich.  And the same Holder who prostrated himself to Hillary Clinton's political ambitions by helping arrange pardons for 16 Puerto Rican terrorists.  Now, he has the nerve to call the rest of us cowards, even as he speaks as the man who controls the entire federal law-enforcement apparatus?  Quite simply, Holder has insulted all Americans, regardless of age or ethnicity.

We Are All Cowards Now.  What's so disconcerting is that a man at the top of his profession, with a wife at the top of hers, in a country that has rewarded his accomplishments and whose people have made epic strides toward the creation of an equitable society, lectures us in a way that can only divide us.  But that's the infernal paradox of multiculturalism.  It preaches tolerance but practices divisiveness.  It pretends to be even-handed but imposes severe restrictions on speech.  It censors brilliant scholars and independent-minded students.  And then the Attorney General criticizes those who don't want to play that self-destructive game.

MLK Vision Fulfilled, say Blacks.  On the first Martin Luther King holiday since Barack Obama was elected President of the United States, most blacks say the King vision is fulfilled, according to a CNN Poll. ... The truth is:  whatever people feel, the objective facts are that blatant racism, expressed in laws that limit the rights of non-white races in the public square, is a very small problem today.  And that's a good thing.

Getting Beyond Race (And White Guilt):  The fact that the nation elected a black president hopefully might turn our attention away from the false notion that discrimination explains the problems of a large segment of the black community, to the real problems that have absolutely nothing to do with discrimination.  The illegitimacy rate among blacks stands at about 70%.  Less than 40% of black children are raised in two-parent households.  Those are major problems, but they have nothing to do with racial discrimination.

How Can a "Fellow Black Republican" Oppose Obama?  Do you know that Democrats opposed the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments to the Constitution — abolishing slavery, granting citizenship rights to newly freed slaves, and guaranteeing the right to vote (at least on paper) to blacks, respectively?  Do you know that most of the politicians who stood for segregation were Southern Democrats?  Do you know that the Ku Klux Klan was founded by Democrats, one of whose goals was to stop the spread of the Republican Party?  Do you know that, as a percentage of the party, more Republicans than Democrats voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1964?

Fidel Castro Endorses Obama — Again.  For the record:  Fidel Castro, forcibly overthrew a black Cuban head of state (Fulgencio Batista) and replaced his government with one where only nine percent of the ruling Stalinist party is black and where the prison population is 80 to 90 percent black.  He jailed the longest suffering black political prisoner of modern history (Eusebio Penalver who suffered longer in Castro's dungeon's than Nelson Mandela suffered in South Africa's.)  He sentenced other blacks (Dr Elias Biscet, Jorge Antunez) to 20 year sentences essentially for quoting Martin Luther King Jr. in a public square.

Readiness crucible.  [Barack] Obama's success is truly a remarkable commentary on the goodness of Americans and how far we've come in resolving matters of race.  I'm 72 years old.  For almost all of my life, a black having a real chance at becoming the president of the United States was at best a pipe dream.  Mr. Obama has convincingly won primaries in states with insignificant black populations.  As such, it further confirms what I've often said:  The civil rights struggle in America is over and it's won.

Obama's Racial Catch-22:  The rapturous coverage of the Obama campaign during the primary was less about Obama himself than it was America congratulating itself for being willing to consider a black man for president, with the subtext being that the United States had finally liberated itself from its racist past.

The Impact Of Violence On Public Education:  In large and mid-sized cities there remain a disproportionate number of minority students as compared with suburban and rural schools.  In New York, 80 percent of the students in the state's large and mid-sized cities are minority, compared with 6 percent in suburban and rural areas.  In Pennsylvania the ratio is 65 percent to 4 percent, and in Washington D.C., 96 percent of the total school population is minority.

The Editor says...
If 94 percent are in the minority, one of us doesn't know what "minority" means.

Michael Moore, Frank Rich, Jeremiah Wright and John Hagee:  Whether out of guilt or because of its own racist views (i.e., the unspoken but regularly implied belief in the inferiority of African-Americans), the left-of-center's general attitude toward black Americans has been that they cannot be judged by the same standards as others.  From lowering standards of admission to universities to blaming the high number of black men in prison for violent crimes on white racism to decades of cultivating black victimhood and the subsequent Wright-like rage against America, liberals and their party, the Democrats, have immeasurably hurt African-Americans and America.

The Race Minefield:  It was a moving speech [at the 2004 Democratic National Convention], filled with hopeful sentiments.  But two years later, Senator Barack Obama, with two years' experience in the Senate and his eye on a presidential run, taped a radio ad attacking the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative (MCRI), going out of his way to defend racial preference policies that by their very definition divide Americans into blacks, whites, Latinos, and Asians.

Why Shakir Can't Read:  Shakir's family situation is a significant part of his problem.  He is one of four children to a twenty-something mother who has three other children by three different men, and she might well be pregnant again by her current boyfriend.  Shakir's mother is unemployed and on welfare.

Rene Marie's 15 Minutes of Fame

Hijacked anthem brings a chorus of complaints.  Rene Marie … was supposed to sing the Star-Spangled Banner at Tuesday's State of the City address [7/1/2008] in Denver, but she substituted the lyrics with a song of her own choosing.  Marie sang "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing," a song informally referred to as the "black national anthem."

Singer subs 'black anthem' for 'Star Spangled Banner'.  A singer who was to perform the "Star Spangled Banner" at the presentation of Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper's State of the City address yesterday substituted the "Black National Anthem" without notifying anyone, because she says as a black, she just doesn't feel American.

Why a Black Artist Replaced the National Anthem:  Last week in Denver, almost all the values of the post-1960s left were exhibited in one act.  It happened on the Denver mayor's most important day — the one in which he was to deliver his annual State of the City Address.  The day was to begin with the singing of the National Anthem by the black jazz singer Rene Marie.  But Ms. Marie had, by her own admission, long had other plans.

Why a Black Artist Replaced the National Anthem:  [Scroll down]  The left's second contribution to Marie's value system has been its elevation of feelings above other values.  For example, one determines right and wrong on the basis of how one feels (as opposed to, let us say, asking what one's religion, or God, or any moral law that transcends one's own feelings would say on a given matter).  Now, the elevation of one's feelings above other considerations is generally viewed as a form of narcissism.  And while narcissism is as old as humanity, until the 1960s it was generally regarded as a character flaw.  Since the 1960s, however, it was more often heralded as a virtue.

One nation, one anthem.  As an individual with free will [Rene Marie] certainly had the choice and opportunity to do what she did.  But she's not protected from public rebuke for an inappropriate, unethical and deceitful. … Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing is not the black national anthem for the simple reason that there is no black nation on the North American continent.  African-Americans are Americans, not Liberians.

Five Racial Absolutes Become Myths:  White churches no longer have an invisible "no blacks wanted" sign hung over their doors.  The integration of congregations is not just being led by white pastors.  In 1981, I was one of the first black preachers in America to lead a predominately white congregation.  What was novel in those years, is becoming more and more common place today.

Media's Double Standard on Race-based Voting:  It is not really relevant, frankly, to point out that most black voters are going to vote in droves for Barack Obama.  Regardless of his race, black voters would vote for the Democrat.  But when you read about Congressman Steve Cohen's race in Tennessee's Ninth Congressional District, you really are confronted by both racism and anti-Semitism in a way we rarely think about in this country.  And the media is silent.  Barack Obama is silent.

Inconspicuous Consumption:  About seven years ago, University of Chicago economists Kerwin Kofi Charles and Erik Hurst were researching the "wealth gap" between black and white Americans when they noticed something striking.  African Americans not only had less wealth than whites with similar incomes, they also had significantly more of their assets tied up in cars.  The statistic fit a stereotype reinforced by countless bling-filled hip-hop videos:  that African Americans spend a lot on cars, clothes, and jewelry — highly visible goods that tell the world the owner has money.  But do they really?

The Democratic Party's Stealth War On Black Americans:  Democrats cooked up the great society, welfare, food stamps, and all other manner of government goodies because they said they wanted to "help" people.  What was the result of that "help?"  The Democrats did something that they hadn't managed to do when they enslaved black Americans, persecuted them with Jim Crow laws, or terrorized them with the Ku Klux Klan:  they managed to nearly destroy the black family.

The enemies of Jim Crow.  Many Americans know that it took strong government action in the 1950s and 1960s to end Southern segregation.  Far too few realize that it was government action that established segregation in the first place.  Today, when the power of the state is being aggrandized as never before, the history of Jim Crow offers a cautionary reminder:  When the political class overrides the private sector, what ensues can be a national disgrace.

What is Black Conservatism?  Respected and well-informed nonwhite spokespersons are increasingly taking up the challenge of bringing conservative and libertarian ideas to nonwhite audiences and bringing their own multicultural perspective to what has been a largely white social and political movement.  These spokespersons include Walter Williams, Thomas Sowell, Clarence Thomas, Herman Cain, and others.

Misstep in a Liberal Minefield:  America has passed another milestone on its march to equal opportunity thanks to Robert Johnson, founder of Black Entertainment Television, who this week proved that a black billionaire can be just as witless as are certain white billionaires who think their wisdom is commensurate with their net worth.  Introducing Clinton at a rally, Johnson called Obama a "guy who says, 'I want to be a reasonable, likable Sidney Poitier in 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.'"  For the uninitiated, that is how you call someone an Uncle Tom in an age that has not read "Uncle Tom's Cabin."

White guilt doesn't help blacks.  Among some black intellectuals a new perspective has emerged, one that puts racism and "white privilege" low on the list of problems plaguing black Americans.  Shelby Steele's latest book, "White Guilt" argues that whites do blacks no favors wringing their hands about white privilege.

Is Oprah a Racist?  Why carry water for Obama, but not Hillary Clinton or John Edwards?  From my vantage point, I can't see a scintilla of difference in their politics.  They're all left-wingers, after all, who believe that raising taxes is the solution to all problems.  The only difference I could see was the only difference that I could literally see — namely, that Barack Obama was darker complexioned than the other two.

Frivolous politics:  Part III.  Racial issues are just one of a growing number of issues where rational discussion has become virtually impossible.  Rational discussion would not serve the interests of the Democratic Party, and the Republicans think that the way to increase their small share of the black vote is to imitate the Democrats.

Census report sees minorities becoming majority by 2042.  In a new report out Thursday [8/14/2008], the U.S. Census Bureau projects the nation will become much more diverse by midcentury, with minorities forecast to become the majority population by 2042, experts said.  The growing national diversity is also a trend seen locally, particularly among Hispanics, experts said.

The Editor comments...
More diverse?  The demographics are diverse whether the minority population is 4% or 40% — unless "diverse" is a just a politically correct code word meaning non-white, which is exactly the case.

The Truth In Black and White:  The term "black conservative" sounds like a strange twist of words to the average American.  There are certainly quite a few of them in America; they are not an endangered species!  In fact, I am one of them.  Yet I am convinced that the simplistic moniker of liberal vs. conservative is becoming outdated and meaningless.

Democrats and Apologies.  If Democrats are going to demand apologies for historic crimes, they need to inform themselves better about their own party's history.  The following racial crimes were perpetrated throughout American history by The Democratic Party, its leaders and supporters … In particular:
Sen. Robert Byrd has admitted having been a member of the Ku Klux Klan and he filibustered the 1964 Civil Rights act supported by Republicans in greater proportions than by Democrats;

Al Gore's father, Sen. Albert Gore Sr. also joined Sen. Byrd in the filibuster of the 1964 Civil Rights Act;

Sen. Ted Kennedy's father, Democrat Joseph Kennedy, the US Ambassador to Britain, was rabidly anti-Semitic and considered by the Nazi Ambassador to be "Germany's best friend" in London.

What is discrimination?  Discrimination is simply the act of choice.  When we choose Bordeaux wine, we discriminate against Burgundy wine.  When I married Mrs. Williams, I discriminated against other women.  Even though I occasionally think about equal opportunity, Mrs. Williams demands continued discrimination.

Should blacks air dirty laundry to a mainstream audience?  Late last year, essayist John Ridley wrote an article for Esquire magazine, using an in-your-face style to rip the black underclass.  He went on to describe famous blacks who've excelled in recent years — Condoleezza Rice, Colin Powell — and argued that the whole group benefited from their work.  It's up to us, he wrote, to emulate their success.

Cultural Whiplash:  The contemporary question of "race" is a question dealing with the derailment of philosophy (and the corresponding decline of morality and ethics) in the postmodern era. ... It is "alienation" not between black and white, but rather between God and man.  The urban black community has, in far too many instances, replaced God with the state and correctly sees the neo-Marxist Democrats as the state party, their ultimate benefactors.  (One might also argue that suburban whites have replaced God with materialism, but that's another essay.)

Man who cried prejudice is arrested.  A black man who claimed discrimination in a lawsuit against one of the Las Vegas Valley's toniest golf clubs has surrendered to federal authorities in Los Angeles after being indicted in an alleged $5 million investment scam.  On Tuesday [1/9/2007] the U.S. attorney's office called Steven M. Ferguson "an economic predator with no legitimate employment," charging him with 24 counts of fraud and money laundering after he allegedly fleeced investors of millions in investment schemes across the country over the last decade.  If convicted, Ferguson could be sentenced to as much as 225 years in federal prison.

Black Power:  The New Conservative Stronghold.  Black conservatives come in many sizes, shapes, and party affiliations.  The next two years are a perfect time for wise conservatives to build bridges with the leaders of the "new black church".  These church leaders are classical social conservatives.  They believe that government programs alone cannot stop crime, poverty, or poor schools.  The new black church is not waiting for a handout.  They are promoting immediate change through wiser, biblically-informed choices and personal accountability.

Race-card player dishonors true victims.  Your crass, manipulative use of the race-card-for-money insults countless men and women who endured indignities, marched and died, in order to provide you the right to work as a firefighter — an opportunity historically denied to qualified black men and women.  You, sir, are a disgrace.

Virginia Tech's Professor of Hate:  Many have asked:  "How could the English Department not recognize the horrific implications of these works?"  No one who wonders that, however, is familiar with the poetic oeuvre of one of Cho's own teachers, Virginia Tech's Distinguished Professor of English and Black Studies, Nikki Giovanni.  Among the most celebrated figures of the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and recipient of 21 honorary degrees, Giovanni has published poems strikingly similar to Cho's plays in both vileness and incompetence.

Is immigration bad for blacks?  Perhaps the most tragic American paradox of the last half century is that as the legal and social restrictions hindering black economic advancement diminished and a sizable black middle class emerged, a large fraction of black men dropped out of the workforce and/or went to prison. … About one quarter of black male high school dropouts are locked up at any point in time.  Was immigration's depressing effect on wages responsible for this by dissuading less skilled blacks from honest labor?

Rap is the culprit in killing of black men.  Of Baltimore's nearly 300 homicide victims each year, the overwhelming majority of victims and killers are young black men.

An Open Letter to the Black Community.  Both personal and institutional racism will ultimately have to be overcome by black achievement.  We have got to personally pay the price to be in positions of authority that set the direction of the nation.  We will have to save ourselves by fighting for personal success that affects our community.  In other words, if I am a businessman, I must understand that I have both an economic mission and a cultural assignment to create good jobs, wealth, and influence.

How the Voting Rights Act promotes racial polarization:  With Congress poised to extend, for another quarter-century, certain "temporary" provisions of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, it's worth pondering some of the political mischief taking place these days in the name of "voting rights."

By Any Means Necessary.  A decision Tuesday [8/29/2006] by a federal judge in Detroit could set the stage for a sweeping expansion of the Voting Rights Act, which would turn the federal courts into a national campaign police.

Pandering to blacks:  Aside from [Senator John] Kerry being factually wrong about more blacks being in prison than in college, his vision differs little from one that holds blacks as a rudderless, victimized people who cannot control their destiny and whose best hope depends upon the benevolence of white people.

Martin Luther King's Conservative Legacy:  Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. was no stalwart conservative, yet his core beliefs, such as the power and necessity of faith-based association and self-government based on absolute truth and moral law, are profoundly conservative.  Modern liberalism rejects these ideas, while conservatives place them at the center of their philosophy.  Despite decades of its appropriation by liberals, King's message was fundamentally conservative.

'Marriage Is for White People'.  I grew up in a time when two-parent families were still the norm, in both black and white America.  Then, as an adult, I saw divorce become more commonplace, then almost a rite of passage.  Today it would appear that many — particularly in the black community — have dispensed with marriage altogether.

My new contribution to educational racism.  The UNC system has a different view of the relationship between guilty and innocent blacks.  We are reminded of that every time a black student commits a crime on campus.  The practice of publishing a photo of a guilty black student — or merely attaching the word "black" to a suspect's description in student newspapers — is met with scorn within the educational community.  This is because we bend over backwards to avoid punishing innocent blacks for the sins of guilty blacks.

The Myth Behind the Crisis in Black America.  Two things caused the downward spiral of poor blacks in Indianapolis and nationwide to the modern-day black underclass with which we are so familiar today:  (1) Adoption of a defiant anti-Establishment mentality as part of the countercultural revolution of the 1960s, cloaked in what John McWhorter calls "therapeutic alienation," in which righteous indignation against "the Man" for its own sake became praised by blacks and liberal whites alike as a badge of black authenticity; and (2) the expansion of welfare from a temporary assistance program for widows with children to a federal bureaucracy that basically subsidized out-of-wedlock childbearing, personal irresponsibility and an aversion to work.

Workers claim racial discrimination:  Bias or shakedown?  Twenty-two current and former employees have sued Ford Motor Co., claiming the automaker allowed discrimination against black employees to fester unchecked in recent years. … Tracing the lawsuits to their roots leads back, ironically perhaps, to a major push by Ford to hire and promote minorities.

Black Activists Outraged Over Liberal Merger of Abortion and Civil Rights.  Inclusion of Planned Parenthood in a self-described civil rights coalition has outraged members of the black leadership network Project 21, as Planned Parenthood advocates and provides abortions -- particularly in the black community.

Abortions — Number, Rate, and Ratio by Race, 1980 to 2003.  Read the numbers for yourself.  It is the blacks who are suffering the most from abortion, yet most blacks continue to support the pro-abortion Democratic Party.

Sen. Kennedy Bashed for Illegal Aliens-Civil Rights Comparison.  A black conservative minister and staunch immigration reform advocate Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson Tuesday [4/11/2006] denounced Sen. Ted Kennedy for comparing pro-illegal immigration rallies to civil rights marches for blacks half a century ago.

Black voters may slip Democrats' grasp in 2006.  This year, Democrats may lose their iron grip on the black vote.  About 90 percent of black Americans vote Democrat, rain or shine.  But a growing sense that Democrats take them for granted — plus several attractive, high-level black Republican candidates who will fight for these votes — could make November 2006 and 2008 fascinating.  For starters, President Bush's black support grew from 9 percent in 2000 to 11 percent in 2004.

Belafonte, Farrakhan speak at Gary gathering.  Entertainer Harry Belafonte has renewed his criticism of President Bush during the second day of the 2006 National Black Peoples Unity Convention in Gary.

Black Flight:  Something momentous is happening here in [Minneapolis] the home of prairie populism:  black flight.  African-American families from the poorest neighborhoods are rapidly abandoning the district public schools, going to charter schools, and taking advantage of open enrollment at suburban public schools.

Gay Unions Fracture Maryland's Black Caucus.  Maryland's African American lawmakers are deeply divided in the emerging debate over same-sex marriage, which forces them to balance their communities' bedrock religious convictions against a traditional commitment to civil rights.

Editor's Note:   Same-sex marriage is not a civil rights issue.  Homosexual activists call it a civil rights issue to generate support for the idea, but that is a sham and a fraud.

Civil rights today:  Like the March of Dimes' victory against polio in the U.S., civil rights organizations can claim victory as well.  At one time, black Americans did not enjoy the same constitutional guarantees as other Americans.  Now we do.  Because the civil rights struggle is over and won doesn't mean that all problems have vanished within the black community.  A 70 percent illegitimacy rate, 65 percent of black children raised in female-headed households, high crime rates and fraudulent education are devastating problems, but they're not civil rights problems.  Furthermore, their solutions do not lie in civil rights strategies.

The paradox that divides black America.  Perhaps nothing else so encapsulates the endless paradoxes of being black in America.  Never have blacks had so much legal freedom, yet there are record numbers in jail.  Traditional black neighborhoods have collapsed into drug-ridden crime strongholds, even as the black middle class is the biggest in history.

The "D" stands for demagogue.  The freaks come out at night.  The demagogues came out on Martin Luther King Day.  Democrat N.Y. Sen. Hillary Clinton, perhaps looking to distract attention from those pesky Code Pink protesters who've been dogging her over the Iraq war, commemorated the holiday by pulling a reverse Sister Souljah at race hustler Al Sharpton's pulpit in Harlem. … When a Democrat politician stumps at a church, you see, it's "minority outreach."  When a Republican politician stumps at a church, it's a theocratic outrage.

Our most destructive kind of racism.  Paula Zahn devoted two of her hour-long CNN shows this week to the topic "Skin Deep: Racism in America."  After taking the time to watch, the question I walked away with was:  "What was the point?"  In my view, the shows told us little that most of us don't already know — strong racist sentiments exist in the country — and really never asked the deeper and more important questions about what this means and why we should care.

Republicans and blacks:  Blacks have voted so overwhelmingly for Democrats for so long that Republicans have few incentives to try to gain black votes — and little success when they do.

When Civil Rights Leaders Were Civilized.  An America where blacks run Merrill Lynch, American Express and the State Department no longer needs civil-rights activism of the Rosa Parks and James Weldon Johnson variety, and hasn't for decades.  Thanks in large part to their diligence and sacrifices, the battle for legal equality has been fought and won.  Blacks still face social and economic challenges, but these result mainly from self-inflicted cultural wounds, not a manifestly unjust society.

Black Teachers for Black Studies?  A Philosophical Critique of Multiculturalist Pedagogy.  Multiculturalists maintain that there is no such thing as truth, only diverse opinions, each "true" in the opinion of the person or group that holds it, none true absolutely.  The increasingly popular notion that instead of simple, universal truth, there is only "white truth" and "black truth," "female truth" and "male truth," "gay truth" and "straight truth," threatens the integrity of American universities, which had been distinguished by their commitment to discovering and disseminating truth without trimming it to suit special-interest groups.

Term 'Minority' Criticized As Outdated.  The majority of residents in Texas, California, New Mexico, Hawaii and Washington, D.C., are some ethnicity other than non-Hispanic whites, according to Census Bureau population estimates released last week.  Five other states, including New York and Georgia, could make that shift by 2010.

U.S. Blacks, if a Nation, Would Rank High on AIDS.  Nearly 600,000 African-Americans are living with H.I.V., the virus that causes AIDS, and up to 30,000 are becoming infected each year.  When adjusted for age, their death rate is two and a half times that of infected whites, the report said.

HIV epidemic in U.S. worse than previously thought, CDC says.  While the epidemic has remained stable for most of this decade, the new figures confirm that the brunt of the epidemic is being borne by gay men and young African Americans and Latinos.  There have been small declines among heterosexuals and injectable-drug users.  Gay men accounted for 53% of new infections in 2006, the most recent year for which data are available.  The infection rate among blacks was seven times that among whites, and the rate among Latinos was nearly three times as high.

Are racial designations real, or just political?  "Texas Becomes Newest 'Majority-Minority' State, Census Bureau Announces."  This was the headline of a recent U.S. Census Bureau press release noting that Texas has now joined Hawaii, New Mexico and California as a state whose "minority" population exceeds 50 percent of the state's population.

White children are now in the minority.  The youngest Anglo children in Hillsborough County and across Florida are now a minority, foreshadowing the day when Florida — like four states now — becomes a majority-minority state.  Non-Hispanic whites in Florida accounted for fewer than half of all children younger than 5 last year, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates released today [8/15/2006].

Records said to dispute Tuskegee Airmen lore.  It has been part of the lore of America's first black fighter pilots since the end of World War II:  The Tuskegee Airmen never lost a bomber to enemy fire.  But now, more than 60 years later, a leader of the group says he has uncovered records proving the claim is not accurate.

You Can't Talk About That.  All of us were still haunted by what we'd been watching on our TV screens through Katrina Week:  the spectacle of several thousand black Americans openly, nakedly displaying their helpless, hopeless, clueless, angry dependency.  It was there, it was real, though we're stuffing it down the memory hole now as fast as we can work our fingers.

Is the Concept of Race Illegitimate?  Several noted social scientists have argued that race is an illegitimate concept and can only foster racism and related evils.  The everyday concept of race is too crude to serve molecular biologists and government policymakers well, but does it follow that race is a completely arbitrary and meaningless concept that necessarily impedes justice and social harmony?

Michael Jackson dodged a bullet.  Black Harvard sociologist Orlando Patterson said, "The sociological truths are that America, while still flawed in its race relations … is now the least racist white-majority society in the world; has a better record of legal protection of minorities than any other society, white or black; offers more opportunities to a greater number of black persons than any other society, including all those of Africa…."

Stealing Black History:  Deleting God from the black experience in America is cutting the heart out of a people's story.

The Downfall of Language:  navigating Ebonics.  Communication is based on mutual understanding and shared information, not broken sentences and questionable, slang-derived expressions, the default language of the uneducated, undereducated, the abandoned, the misrepresented and the disenfranchised.

Almost everything designated a "civil rights" problem isn't.  Does anyone really think America suffers from an insufficiency of talk about race?  What is in scarce supply is talk about the meaning of the phrase "civil rights."  Not every need is a right, and if the adjective is a modifier that modifies, not every right is a civil right — one central to participation in civic life.

Black rednecks and white liberals:  Teachers are not supposed to correct black youngsters who speak "black English" and no one is supposed to be judgmental about the whole lifestyle of black rednecks.  In that culture, belligerence is considered being manly and crudity is considered cool, while being civilized is regarded as "acting white."  These are devastating, self-imposed handicaps that prevent many young ghetto blacks from getting a decent education or an opportunity to rise to higher levels.

A must read:  Thomas Sowell's new volume, "Black Rednecks and White Liberals," offers a taste of some of his earlier work as well as a cornucopia of new insights. … The title refers to the first essay, which argues that many of the traits commonly considered "authentically black" are actually the inheritance of the white redneck culture amid which many blacks lived for centuries.  These include hair-trigger touchiness on the part of men, anti-intellectualism, pride, sexual license, backwardness and laziness.

Reaction to Sowell's new book:
Who's a redneck?  Some whites in the South have reacted with resentment at the thought that they are being stereotyped as rednecks while some blacks resent anything that suggests anything negative about themselves.

Note:  This article is replete with quotations from vulgar, profane and obscene lyrics.
How Hip-Hop Holds Blacks Back.  Not long ago, I was having lunch in a KFC in Harlem, sitting near eight African-American boys, aged about 14.  Since 1) it was 1:30 on a school day, 2) they were carrying book bags, and 3) they seemed to be in no hurry, I assumed they were skipping school.  They were extremely loud and unruly, tossing food at one another and leaving it on the floor.  Black people ran the restaurant and made up the bulk of the customers, but it was hard to see much healthy "black community" here.

Memo to young black men:  Please grow up.  Hip hop began as some sort of Afro protest doggerel and was very quickly taken over by the gangster rappers, who emphasized the crudest materialism in which the ultimate goal was money and it did not matter how one got it.  The street thug, the gang member, the drug dealer and the pimp became icons of sensibility and success.

Obama And The Hip-Hop Problem:  [Senator] Obama should take a look at a new report from the Parents Television Council about three popular rap-music programs that air in the afternoon or early evening — "Sucker Free" on MTV and "Rap City" and "106 & Park" on Black Entertainment Television for two weeks in December and a week in March.  In 41 and a half hours studied, analysts found 282 uses of the N-word. … In those same hours, there were 143 uses of the B-word to describe women. … The rap shows included 205 depictions or discussions of drug sale or use and other illegal activity during the study period, for an average of 7.5 instances per hour, or roughly one instance every eight minutes.

Hip-hop videos give the wrong lessons in social behavior.  The X-rated rap lyrics are troubling enough.  In addition to that, the videos portray raw anger over seemingly minor disputes, violent hyper-masculinity and shallow materialism.  But even more crass are the roles assigned to young attractive women:  They are inevitably cast as mercenary trollops, eager and available for any thug-style pleasure.

Hip-hop's contribution to society?  Words that aren't fit to print.  The other night, for example, clicking between the Twins and Cleveland and hockey's Vancouver and Dallas I stumbled onto one of the cable network's comedy shows.  By comedy show, I mean one in the seemingly endless showcases of primarily young black male comics performing before primarily a young black audience. … Without exaggeration, I would say that this guy used every offensive word possible, to his race in general and to women specifically, in the 25 seconds I watched.

UPN's wild hip-hop awards party.  The awards began with the rapper called "The Game" winning for "Hottest Hook" for a song called "Hate It Or Love It."  The song has all the typical lyrics about glorious gang-banging for big money and how he used to threaten to kill people over Nike sneakers.  When he won, he just had to declare from the stage that, "I want to thank God, from whom all blessings flow."  God must have been so pleased.

Say no to hip-hop's excesses.  If the civil rights establishment is looking for a new crusade, it needs to summon the guts to ignore the billions that flow through the hip-hop industry.  At the close of 2004 all top-10 rap singles ranked by Billboard used the "n" word in their uncensored versions. … Black rappers are wearing the chains of volunteer slavery.

And the cheat goes on.  I am astounded by the naïvité of young people — black and white — who actually buy the canned rebelliousness not just of rap music but of most pop music. … It's all such an obvious con game.  We hear so much about how kids today are cynical, skeptical, media-savvy and so forth.  But if they're buying this hooey, they're idiots.

The Democratic party:  Modern day slave master.  The Democratic Party, the liberal "mainstream" media and the rest of the cultural elites are having a very hard time handling Dr. Rice's rise to power.  They've waged a disgraceful, racist and cowardly back-door assault against her.  Why?  Little Ms. Condoleezza has wandered away from the plantation.  She refuses to slave in the cotton fields of "progressive" ideology.

The gig is up for Berry.  After nearly a quarter century of mischief-making at the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, Chairman Mary Frances Berry is on her way out the door.  Few government officials in the nation's history have managed to hold on to power for so long or wielded it as autocratically and in pursuit of such radical aims as has Dr. Berry.

Another dictator toppled (here at home).  Mary Frances Berry, chairman of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, is resigning.  Those scratch marks on the floor may be from her fingernails as they dragged her from the building by her feet.  Berry has been a member of the commission for 24 of its 47 years. ... Berry departs with allegations of mismanagement swirling about her head.  The commission is small potatoes, Washington-wise, with a budget of only $9 million and a staff of only 70.  But no one knows how that money has been spent over the past 12 years, while Berry has presided with an iron hand.

Black Clergy Denounces "Racial Motivated Attacks" on Condoleezza Rice.  A coalition of black clergy Friday [11/19/2004] denounced recent "racial motivated attacks" by three editorial cartoonists, the Washington Post and the New York Times upon National Security Adviser Dr. Condoleezza Rice, who was recently nominated by President Bush to serve as the next secretary of state.

When liberals play the race card:  Look at the treatment of prominent black Republicans like National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice and Secretary of State Colin Powell.  Liberal critics pull no punches in using race to criticize them.  Political cartoonists Pat Oliphant and Jeff Danziger drew political cartoons accentuating Dr. Rice's black features and depict her speaking in rural Southern dialect.  Garry Trudeau referred to her as "Brown Sugar" in his comic strip, "Doonesbury."

Note:  All the material about the Duke Lacrosse case has been moved here.

Anti-intellectualism among the academic elite.  Jon Entine, in his book "Taboo: Why Black Athletes Dominate Sports And Why We're Afraid to Talk About It" (1999), says, "All of the 32 finalists in the last four Olympic men's 100-meter races are of West African descent."  The probability of such an outcome by chance is all but zero.  The genetic physiological and biomechanical characteristics that cause blacks to excel in some sports — basketball, football and track — spell disaster for those who have aspirations to be Olympic-class swimmers.  Entine says, "No African American has ever qualified for the U.S. Olympic swim or dive team.

Bigotry and Sports:  Although not too many years ago, sports-writing was considered the "toy department" of journalism, the boys and girls in the press box have been eager to catch up to their counterparts in the "real" world.  And so, they are also no longer content with merely reporting the scores, trades and what have you; they must now generate the news.  And, similar to the mainstream media, they need divisive issues in order to push the agenda of all J-school graduates:  to change the world.

Selling out black Americans:  "We, black Americans are being displaced in Los Angeles," [Terry] Anderson told an indifferent Congress.  "We are being systematically and economically replaced.  And the next time somebody tells you that the illegals only take jobs that blacks won't do, just remember that we were doing those jobs before the illegals got here."

The jobs conundrum.  If unemployment is so high among young black men, why are we importing young Hispanic men from Mexico and El Salvador to do construction work and other manual labor? ... Surely, with unemployment among the young black community at above 30 percent, some of these projects could hire black kids to do the hard work of construction.  Why don't they?

Why more blacks support Bush this year.  According to two polls released over the week just passed, President Bush has picked up significant ground among black voters.  A New York Times poll showed black support for the president at 17 percent.

No Respect for Diversity in News Coverage of Rice 9/11 Testimony.  It's not unusual for folks to wonder if there is a double standard in the news media.  Usually, that question has to do with ideology, a liberal or conservative bias perhaps.  But the headlines about Dr. Rice's testimony are not about ideology, but about diversity in views.  The press just can't seem to understand that a well-educated black woman could hold the views Dr. Rice holds.

Any serious discussion of race must address out-of-wedlock births.  [Obama] did acknowledge that welfare policies "may" have hurt black families.  But he affirmed with certainty that "a lack of economic opportunity among black men, and the shame and frustration that came from not being able to provide for one's family, contributed to the erosion of black families."  That's true.  But it's also true that African-American families were much more intact in the decades before the Civil Rights Act than they were in the decades after it.

Same-sex marriage and the disposal of fatherhood:  Single motherhood is a predictor for children at higher risk for teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, academic underachievement, drug use and juvenile delinquency.  Nowhere is this correlation more strongly substantiated than in the African-American community — where 68 percent of black children are born to unwed mothers and half of black males between ages 18-35 are involved in America's criminal-justice system, according to a study of urban youths in Washington, D.C. and Baltimore.

Black men must reclaim our children.  As the mug shots of the alleged killers of NFL star Sean Taylor were shown on television, I kept wondering when we were going to see their parents step forward.  I saw a couple of mothers, but their dads were missing in action.  Dads matter, and it's ridiculous for us to act as if all it takes is a loving mom.

The Wisdom of Conservative Blacks:  Conservatism in America contends that by being self-reliant, getting an education, and holding dear the importance of family values, all Americans should have the opportunity to achieve at least a comfortable middle-class lifestyle.  If you think about it, the idea of conservatism is nothing short of the "American Dream."  There are several voices within the conservative black community.  They are not merely an "echo" of each other, but individuals with an identity and a message in the spirit of Booker T. Washington, Frederic Douglass, and Mary McLeod Bethune.

Why aren't black voters rallying to Bush?   At a time when one of the nation's primary concerns is foreign affairs and terrorism, we have a black secretary of state and a black national security adviser.  Never have blacks held such top jobs in an administration.  Why then does The Washington Post/ABC poll done in May [2004] show only 6 percent support among blacks for Bush?

HBO'S Anti-Whitewashed Fairy Tales:  In Jack and the Beanstalk, not only are all the players black but so even is a rabbit that jumps out of a magician's hat.  In Little Red Riding Hood (or "Happy Coat" in this China-based tale) even the squirrels have almond-shaped eyes.  That squirrels do not have the extra fold that characterizes Asian eyelids is irrelevant.  Even nature bows to the PC gods at HBO.  It seems only one major ethnic group has been left out.  Of over 90 voices used in this series, just one appears to belong to a token white of non-Hispanic descent.

Bob Kerrey clarifies the liberal view of blacks and women:  It is widely believed in universities and in the media that conservatives are more likely than liberals to be racist and sexist.  I have long believed that the opposite is true, that most Democratic politicians and most liberal activists, at the very least, do not regard black people as they do all others and, at worst, believe that blacks are inferior.

Liberal damage to black America is enormous.  One of the most dangerous myths in our lifetime has been that liberalism and the Democratic Party are black America's best friends.  For all of us who desperately want African-Americans to prosper, the destruction of this myth may be the single most important step to that end.

Real Racism:  The cultural Marxists are trying to get a fear of unfair criticism or name-calling to intimidate you and me into failing to point out, speak out, and fight back against Political Correctness and those who are carrying forward its destructive work.  If you and I let them intimidate us, then we are helping to continue the serious problems that all Americans, and especially black Americans, are suffering from today.

African-Americans and Election 2000:  In 1911, President Woodrow Wilson wisely observed:  "A nation which does not remember what it was yesterday, does not know what it is today, nor what it is trying to do.  We are trying to do a futile thing if we do not know where we came from or what we have been about."  This is still true today, especially concerning African-American history.  (Also available in PDF format.

George Washington, Thomas Jefferson & Slavery in Virginia:  It is ironic that two prominent Founding Fathers who owned slaves (Thomas Jefferson and George Washington) were both early — albeit unsuccessful — pioneers in the movement to end slavery in their State and in the nation.

Excellent!   Which political party supports your values?  Compare the basic principles and values of the two major political parties and decide for yourself.

Federal Museum Denies Slavery in Africa Was "Dehumanizing":  The Smithsonian's African American history museum states that although instances of slavery can be found throughout human history, the practice did not become "dehumanizing" until white Europeans came along and took slaves to the Americas.  In other words, the Smithsonian claims that black-on-black slavery, which continues to this day, isn't dehumanizing, but white-on-black slavery was.

The Earliest Civil Rights Efforts:  The passage of the 14th Amendment, much like the 13th Amendment, was also along partisan lines.  In the House, it passed 138 to 36.  Of the 134 Republicans in the House, 128 (96%) voted to provide civil rights to former slaves; of the 36 Democrats, none (0%) voted to give civil rights to African Americans; and of the 11 third-party representatives, 10 (91%) voted in favor of racial civil rights.

Black Pastor Compares Abortion to Slavery,  citing "racist" statements from the founder of Planned Parenthood.  An estimated 1,452 African-American children are killed each day by the act of abortion.  Between 1882 and 1968, 3,446 blacks were lynched in the United States — a number surpassed in less than three days by abortion.

Abortion is Causing "Black Genocide," Activists Say.  During America's commemoration of Black History Month, some pro-life activists are charging that legalized abortion has led to a "black genocide" of more than 14 million unborn African-American babies.  They condemn, in particular, the Planned Parenthood Federation of America…

Race, Law and Society:  The United States Supreme Court's decision to review Grutter v. Bollinger could have long-term consequences in how our society approaches issues of race, affirmative action, quotas and diversity as we enter this new millennium.

"White guilt" and affirmative action:  At the University of Michigan, black, Hispanic and Native American applicants to the college get 20 bonus points just for the accident of their birth.  A similar mechanism is in place for admission to the law school, too.

Blacks and Guns:  African-Americans have a serious problem with guns.  They don't have enough of them.  Despite being victimized by crime at several times the rate of whites, only 30 percent of black adults own guns, compared to 43 percent of whites.

Felons call voting ban unfair to minorities.  A lawsuit pending [in Seattle] and similar cases across the country have asked the courts to overturn state laws that keep felons from the ballot box, claiming the laws discriminate against minorities who make up a disproportionate number of the nation's prisoners.

The nobleness of black conservatives:  Have you ever considered what it would be like to be a black political conservative in modern America?  How many people are brave enough to endure the kind of vilification and scorn they routinely encounter?

The making of a black underclass:  In a few short weeks, many thousands of black children will enter first grade in public schools all over America where, inside of a year, many of them will become full-fledged reading failures and, thereby, future members of the black underclass.

Republicans' New Con Job:  The "Containment Theory" Of Affirmative Action.  Some Republicans have decided that affirmative action is here to stay, so the best we can do is to contain it.  That means limiting affirmative action to blacks and American Indians.  Containment is surrender.  This ain't the Cold War; this is the war for the Constitution.

Colin Powell Jeered in Africa for Treating Africans as Equals:  Media reports on Secretary of State Colin Powell seem more determined to find — or worse — create an aura of controversy between the Bush Administration and Secretary of State Colin Powell than they are to actually REPORT what Powell is saying.

Don't Believe the Hype – You Can Embrace Conservatism:  "Black America has a challenge.  Despite steady improvement in our quality of life, much remains to be done.  To speed improvement, liberal domination of our politics must come to a screeching halt.  We must pull the brakes and return black America to our conservative roots."

Issues & Views:  The hard copy edition of this newsletter was founded in 1985 by black Americans who advocate self-help and business enterprise and the protection of constitutional rights.  It is a forum for dissidents, conservatives, and plain old mavericks — all those who are concerned about cultural decline and the erosion of our constitutional liberties.

Stereotypes About Stereotypes:  Statistical disparities among groups are routinely equated with discrimination, as if there could not possibly be any differences in behavior or performance among the groups themselves.

Debating The Unmentionable:  The Black-White IQ Gap:  The racial gap in average IQ is one of the most important factors in modern American life.  We can tell how important it is because we aren't allowed to talk about it.  The IQ gap is rather like the dog that didn't bark in the Sherlock Holmes story, palpable by its absence.  Raising black IQ was an explicit goal of Great Society programs such as Head Start … [But] When the 1960s-1970s burst of spending failed to deliver quick results, however, the topic was slowly driven out of polite society.

James D. Watson:  Broken by the PC Inquisition, Betrayed by the Righteous Right.  James D. Watson, perhaps the most distinguished living American scientist, has now been kicked to the curb by the Cold Spring Harbor genetics laboratory he rescued and rebuilt over the last 40 years for making politically (but not scientifically) incorrect statements about African IQs.

Race and IQ:  Only the repeated renorming of IQ tests upward created the illusion that blacks had made no progress, but were stuck at an IQ of 85.  But we would never have known this if some researchers had not defied the taboo on studying race and IQ imposed by black "leaders" and white "friends."

Race and IQ: part II:  According to Professor John McWhorter, a black faculty member at the University of California at Berkeley, anti-intellectualism in the black culture keeps many black youngsters from doing their best.

Race and IQ:  Part III:  I happened to run into Charles Murray in Dulles International Airport while he and Richard Herrnstein were writing "The Bell Curve."  When I asked him what he was working on and he summarized what he was writing, he could tell that I was concerned about him, so I told him why:  "Charles, no matter what you say, people will hear what they want to hear."

The Lie Is Winning:  Scapegoating Lino Graglia.  Even when all the groups have had the same access to education, not all have seized the opportunity to the same degree or put the same effort into it.  No one with the slightest regard for facts can deny that this is true in the United States today.  Even black and white liberals have expressed dismay that black children who try to do well in school are denounced by their peers for "acting white."

Black Education:  At Baltimore's predominantly black Frederick Douglass High School … students are four to five years below grade level.  Most of its ninth-graders read at the third-, fourth- or fifth-grade levels.  In 2006, only 24 percent of its students tested proficient in reading, in math just 11 percent, and that's an improvement over previous years.  Only one student managed to score above 1,000 on the SAT and another student scored 440 out of 1,600.  You get 400 points for just writing in your name.  Out of its 1,100 students, 200 to 300 are absent each day.

States Help Schools Hide Minority Scores.  States are helping public schools escape potential penalties by skirting the No Child Left Behind law's requirement that students of all races must show annual academic progress.  With the federal government's permission, schools aren't counting the test scores of nearly two million students when they report progress by racial groups, an Associated Press computer analysis found.

Prosperity's Critical Ingredients:  African leaders are quick to blame the legacy of colonialism for their troubles.  I'll never make an argument for colonialism, but the fact is the average African was better off under colonialism than he has ever been under independence.

Dr. King, Roe v. Wade and Margaret Sanger:  Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger formed the organization to implement the eugenic ideology that prevailed in the early 20th century.  The eugenicists with whom she aligned herself espoused belief, as Sanger put it, in the "supremacy" and "purity" of certain races of people, notably the Aryan race.  They believed the "fit" should be encouraged to reproduce, while the "unfit" should constrain their numbers.  The "unfit" were the poor, racial minorities and certain groups of immigrants, and the physically and mentally handicapped.  They sought to accomplish this through sterilization, birth control and, eventually, abortion.

The Negro Project:  Margaret Sanger's Eugenic Plan for Black Americans.  The disproportionately high number of abortions in the black community is no accident.  Many Americans — black and white — are unaware of Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger's Negro Project.  Sanger created this program in 1939, after the organization changed its name from the American Birth Control League to the Birth Control Federation of America.  The aim of the program was to restrict — many believe exterminate — the black population.

Clinton Library Woos Blacks After Destruction of Slave Landmark:  Despite the demolition of an African-American landmark on the grounds of Bill Clinton's future presidential library, library officials are now openly wooing black tourists and businesses.

Making the case:  The lawlessness of today's racial quota and gun control liberals may be coming under serious challenge.

White Guilt = Black Power:  There should be many more imbroglios like the one currently playing out at Harvard University, enough for America to finally understand that white guilt is exactly the same thing as black power.  But it is testament to the daunting power of white guilt that confrontations like this one happen so rarely.

Of Human Bondage:  21st Century Slavery:  Every year, at least 700,000 human beings are traded for profit like so much property.  In his battle against this international human trafficking, Chris Smith — a Republican congressman from New Jersey — has undertaken retail rescue operations as well as wholesale policy reforms.

Do We Want Mexifornia?  Californians cannot even obtain accurate numbers of how many of the state's more than 10 million Hispanic residents have arrived here from Mexico unlawfully in the last two decades.  No one believes the government's old insistence on a mere 6 million illegal residents nationwide; the real figure may be twice that.

The Language of Race  is punctuated with descriptions that underscore ethnicity but describe nothing.  It is mired in euphemisms and the tortured, convoluted syntax that betray America's pathological avoidance of straight talk about race relations.  Put it all together and you get stereotypes, dangerous misinformation, half-truths, and daily proof that when it comes to race, journalists are chained to habits that defy the cornerstone principles of solid journalism.

The Origin of the Infamous N-Word

Clarence Thomas:  Many blacks like the idea, but dislike the reality.  While ethnic diversity is good, it is no substitute for commitment to fundamental rights, liberties and constitutional principles.

"Racism" In Word and Deed:  California Democrat policies hurt blacks (and whites) where it really matters.  Housing is just one of the areas where the black vote goes overwhelmingly to politicians whose policies are harmful to blacks.  Even more harmful in the long run are failing public schools in the ghettos, where much of the next generation has its hopes of advancement destroyed before they can even get off the ground.
